Stuff

  • 30L MontBell Kitra - It seems small but I still have some extra space in here. After traveling for a while I've cut down on the amount of stuff I'm carrying and carrying a half-full large backpack puts extra strain on the hips.
  • 18L Marmot Kompressor - This little backpack squeezes into a little ball to fit in the big bag and is an amazing daypack.
  • 2 (possibly counterfeit) Lotto t-shirts - From Mustafa Center in Singapore. As thin and light as possible because of the heat.
  • 1 collared shirt - From REI. It's good to look nice sometimes and is a good layer in the cold.
  • 1 convertible shorts/pants - From REI. Since they dry very quickly I only need one. The removable pant legs make it easy to warm up or cool down on the go.
  • 3 Ex-Officio boxer briefs - Very comfortable and quick drying.
  • New Balance 574 Dragon Pack shoes - From ABC Mart in Tokyo. These are just awesome. I got the red ones.
  • 1 MSR personal towel - Small and quick drying
  • MacBook Air 11" - Small and light while being powerful enough to get my work done. It's an amazing machine. I'm not sure whether I prefer it or the 13". Screen size vs. portability is hard.
  • Lacie Rugged 1.5TB hard drive - I take a lot of pictures and brought various forms of entertainment which take up a lot of space.
  • Olympus PEN E-P3 - I love this camera. It's very portable and takes amazing photos.
  • Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens - This lens is ridiculously tiny. With both this and the 20mm the camera easily fits in my jacket or shirt pocket.
  • Panasonic 20mm  f/1.7 lens - Amazing in low light and really small for portability.
  • iPad 2 - I brought it mostly to develop for. I sometimes play games on planes.
  • Samsung Galaxy Mini Android phone - I got this to be able to buy international SIM cards. Android is terrible. The battery dies in a couple hours. I should have gotten an iPhone 4S.
  • iPhone 4 locked to AT&T - The Android phone is so terrible I kept it and carry it everywhere as a watch and to pick up random WiFi.
  • Kindle Touch 3G - For reading on trains and planes and other automobiles.
  • Moleskine notebook - For writing down ideas or drawing out designs.
  • Crumpler camera bagJust the right size to fit the camera, a lens, and two spare batteries. Once I replaced the Olympus 14-42 with the smaller Panasonic 14-42, this was a great option.
  • Olympus lens case - I was using this as a bag to carry both the camera and spare lens. After replacing it with the Crumpler I am just using it to organize some random things.
  • Toiletries, shaver, medicines - Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaver, bag of medicines
  • ClotheslineI've only used it twice, but it's small and comes in handy sometimes.
Plus cold weather items:
  • 1 Uniqlo jacket
  • 1 Uniqlo HEATTECH pants
  • 1 Uniqlo Sweat pants
  • 2 Uniqlo HEATTECH shirts
  • 3 Uniqlo socks
  • 1 epic jacket

As I've traveled it's turned out that most of the things I originally bought in preparation for this trip didn't work out very well, so I'll also list things I started with and changes I made.

Changes I made since I started: (      = rejected,       = new)
50L Kelty Redwing backpack - This backpack was completely filled when I left but ended up
being far too big after I got rid of a lot of things.
      30L MontBell Kitra backpack
3 t-shirts from REI - These shirts ended up being far too warm for tropical countries.
2 t-shirts from Mustafa Center in Singapore
2 1 collared shirts from REI
1 zipped sweater/jacket - I was in tropical countries for two months and never wore more than a t
      shirt.
1 thin raincoat - It was so hot that rain felt great but it rarely rained anyway.
2 1 convertible shorts/pants from REI - I kept one of these since they're pretty heavy. They dry in a
couple hours since they're nylon so only one is fine.
1 shorts from REI - Didn't need more than one pair of shorts since they're easy to clean.
3 socks from REI - Some wear and tear and found more awesome ones at Uniqlo.
1 Ecco hiking shoes - Too heavy and boring.
New Balance 574 Dragon Pack (red) shoes
1 travel pillow - All hostels have good pillows.
1 travel sheet - All hostels have good sheets.
1 backpack rain cover - Backpack was water resistant already. It's not as if I walk around in the
rain unprotected for hours. I never used it.
2 Platypus hydration packs - It was easier to just carry regular water bottles.
MacBook Air 13" - This one was not by choice. I broke it by dropping my iPad charger on it in
Bangkok. The cost to fix it in Bangkok was prohibitive so I sent it to my parents and replaced it
      with the cheapest 11".
MacBook Air 11" - It turns out I actually like the 11" size. But Bangkok didn't have the larger
drive or faster processor so it's an i5 with 128 GB which isn't really enough given how many
      photos I take.
Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens - Good lens but the Panasonic one is effectively the same
      and much more portable.
      Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens
      Samsung Galaxy Mini Android phone
      Crumpler camera bag
Cold weather changes:
      1 swim trunks from Hawaii
      1 Uniqlo jacket
      1 Uniqlo HeatTech pants
      1 Uniqlo Sweat pants
      2 Uniqlo HeatTech shirts
      3 Uniqlo socks
      1 epic jacket
